So far so good. August 4, 2008 Kitzie (Poconos, Pennsylvania) I've had probably six rice cookers to date, I'm incapable of making rice the "real way", so for me the rice cookers and microwave rice are a necessity.
So far this one is the nicest I've had, the design is nice, the lid design helps keep the rice warmed without it turning into a burnt mess. I can cook bigger quantities and the rice comes out cooked perfectly. I cant speak for the longevity of it but I've used it twice now and it seems to work great and makes delicious rice.
I might actually be sad when this one goes to the rice cooker graveyard.
Not really for fondue May 24, 2008 Tori 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this product because of its versatility. A product that can steam vegetables and fish? Make rice? Cook beans? Make fondue? What a great idea! I haven't tried it for all of those things yet, but I did try fondue. The biggest disadvantage is that the lid does not come off. So it's blocking access to the pot from that direction. Also, it doesn't have a "skewer holder ring" so the forks slide around and fall in if you're not holding onto them. The included "recipe book" is really just advertisements for all the Oster appliances. There's very little in it about the rice cooker.
The one advantage this product has over some "real" fondue pots is that it has two temperature settings, "Cook" and "Keep Warm." The "Keep Warm" function could be helpful when serving chocolate or cheese fondues, so that they stay melted without burning. And perhaps the fondue could be prepared in the pot itself. It does get quite hot on the "Cook" setting. (Most fondue pots are only for serving the fondue. It must be prepared on the stove.) The manual warns against operating this unit uncovered, because steam is generated during use. Rice probably wouldn't cook if it was uncovered, but I think most people are pretty used to experiencing steam while cooking.
Bottom line? I'm glad I bought this product. I see it sort of as an electric cooking pot that will turn to Warm if the food is going to burn. Kind of as a hotter crock pot/slow cooker. It is quite versatile and I'll use it for many products ... but I'm in the market for the Electric Multi Fondue Set 1.6 liter/56 oz.- Trudeau.
Oster Rice Cooker not bad April 24, 2008 Martha R. Fletcher (Randallstown, MD) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I decided to try a rice cooker because my family prefers rice over potatoes and I wanted to be able to leave the rice to warm while I did other things for a meal.
Good points- *This cooker is easy to clean. *This cooker is easy to use. Just fill according to directions and portion size needed, press the lever and let it go. *It comes with a steamer basket to give this cooker double duty for veggies, dumplings etc. *It is a very handsome design that matches a great many other products from different manufacturers. *The liner is non-stick and removable for easy cleaning. *In my use it has never boiled over BUT a great deal of HOT steam is vented from the top as it cooks so be careful.
Not so good points- *It can tend to over cook and make a brown crust to the rice on the very bottom of the pan. This is not helped by the warming cycle that continues as long as the cooker is plugged in. The best thing is to be aware when the cycle ends and unplug the unit. It will keep rice warm for a meal on it's own. *I found it needed a bit more water than the directions called for to cook any type of rice. *This unit has no off/on switch to turn it OFF. You must unplug the unit to truly turn it OFF.
I would recommend this unit to anyone who wants to try a rice cooker. We have been happy and it saves a burner on the stove for other cooking needs. Just keep an eye for when the rice is done and unplug the unit. It will keep rice warm just on it's own without the warming cycle.
